Maldives targets mass market with affordable hotels
The government of the Indian Ocean archipelago this week revealed plans to build dozens of mid-range hotels and guesthouses in an attempt to arrest the downturn in tourism.

Mohamed Nasheed, the newly elected president of the Maldives, said he would allow construction of two- and three-star hotels and cheap guesthouses on islands – including some of the uninhabited ones – to make the country a more affordable holiday destination. He maintained that any construction would be sustainable and new properties would be approved only if the developers were willing to invest in infrastructure and public transport links on the islands.

Last year the Maldives attracted about 200,000 British holidaymakers, but the number of visitors has slowed markedly. In February, British visitor numbers fell by 24 per cent compared with the same month last year and many travel operators and hoteliers have already reduced their prices.

Meedhupparu, a four-star resort, last month made half of its employees redundant after revealing that in February it was less than a third full. British tour operators are now offering week-long packages in the Maldives for as little as £649. Even some of the most luxurious resorts have halved their rates. Elegant Resorts this week was offering seven nights’ half board at the five-star One&Only resort of Reethi Rah for £1,795 per person – a discount of £3,240 per couple.

It is hoped the developments will attract an extra 100,000 Britons, including backpackers and gap-year travellers.

“The average British person should be able to come to enjoy the Maldives and see the sun, the sea and the sand,” said Mr Nasheed.

He said the Maldives originally catered to a wider range of tourists, but over the past decade the main focus has been on high-end holidays, making the islands a byword for luxury beach breaks. As part of the drive to introduce lower room rates, Mr Nasheed said small guesthouse operators will pay cheaper rents than the larger hotel chains.
Asians To Travel More Within Asia as Downturn Hardens
As the global recession bites, Asian tourism is moving towards a reliance on tourists from within Asia, and even increasingly, for those that have such a market, domestic tourism.

However, the traditional tourism generating powerhouses of Japan and South Korea are facing painful economic problems. Only China and India currently offer much hope. Even in these two emerging markets, travellers have already reduced their trips and say they will reduce more in 2009.

These are the findings of The ITB World Travel Trends Report, which was written by IPK International and officially published on Monday by Messe Berlin.

The report draws on results from the World Travel Monitor by IPK, a continuous and representative survey interviewing 500,000 persons in 58 countries around the world each year. Combined with statistics from the UNWTO, the report delivers a highly detailed picture of what happened in 2008 and what is likely to happen in 2009 and beyond.
Maldives to be promoted as a destination for eco tourism
Work is underway to promote Maldives as a special destination for eco tourism lovers, Tourism Minister Dr. Ali Sawaadh has said.

Minister Sawaadh said special projects are underway to transform Maamakunudhoo region in to a special destination for eco tourism lovers. Sawaadh said Maamakunudhoo region is inhabited by huge whale shark population and has many suitable islands with sandy beaches and clear lagoons. He said the region was selected for development of eco tourism after careful study.

“Eco tourism is one fast developing sector of this industry, tourism which protects natural resources is fast developing in many countries” Ali Faiz who works in the tourism industry said.

According to Faiz, in countries where logging is carried out, introduction of eco tourism has helped to prevent increase in logging, preserved the jungles for tourism and helped local communities. Ali Faiz said it is already late to introduce eco tourism in Maldives, and that it should have been done years ago.

Maldives ranked as the Best Beach and Rest & Relaxation destination
The Maldives has been ranked as the Best Country Brand for Beach and Best Country Brand for Rest and Relaxation for the year 2008. Maldives also ranked 2nd in the Best Country Brand for Natural Beauty and 3rd in the Best Country Brand for Resort and Lodging Options. The Country Brand Index was officially released during London’s World Travel Market in November 2008.

Country Brand Index is a comprehensive study of approximately 2,700 international business and leisure travellers from nine countries. It is conducted by FutureBrand, a global brand consultancy company and Weber Shandwick which is a public relations firm.

The main marketing slogan for the destination Maldives is “Maldives…the Sunny Side of Life”. The wellness and relaxation aspect is promoted under the theme of “Maldives…the Spiritual Side of Life”.
